Fort Piute

Fort Piute was an outpost of Camp Cady and later of Fort Mojave It was one of a series of posts built to protect wagon traffic along the  Mojave Road and keep local Native American people of the Mojave away from the springs on the route during the periods of hostilities with them between 1859 and 1870.

You can hear the mystical singing sands of the Kelso Dunes, also known as the Kelso Dune Field, is the largest field of eolian sand deposits in the Mojave Desert. The Kelso Dunes are also notable for the phenomenon known as singing sand, or “booming dunes”. Enthusiasts sometimes climb to the top of the dunes and slide down slowly, generating a low-frequency rumble that can be both felt and heard.

We will climb deep into a lava tube. A lava tube is a natural conduit formed by flowing lava which moves beneath the hardened surface of a lava flow.

There are 6 abandon ghost towns in the Mohave desert. We will stop at a few.  We may even camp in a deserted mining town.  Lots of structures still remain.

The Joshua Tree Forest is an amazing place. this several mile section weaves through a thick forest of Joshua trees.  The road gets very narrow in this thick forest in Lanfair Valley.

Afton Canyon

Hike deep into this dark canyon.  You’ll need lights because it goes so far that it becomes totally dark and you will need to climb and crawl.
